I Crossed The Line!

“I haven’t had a vibrant Monday like this one in years! I was too hyper. The weekend is to blame. Then your Kafunda article was published – I almost flipped! When are you taking me to that Sheshaz place?”

I read the message with a stupid huge grin. My friends love the drama. Well, I do relate. I didn’t suffer the Monday blues either and for good reason! I joined The Africa Channel team as their Ugandan contributor and my first article #DingyEats was published. It was so surreal! I was ecstatic! The comments were overwhelming. One of my friends jokingly declared that I’d become a “celebrity writer”! I wish!

In other exciting news, there will be a marathon on 19 July 2015 in Lake Mburo National Park! Frankly speaking, I don’t know how much running will take place that day. Have you ever been to Lake Mburo National Park? It’s breathtaking beautiful! I’ve only been there once. My friends and I left the city at 6 am and got there at bout 11 am. Had we not stopped to take photos at the Equator and had breakfast, we would have arrived at the park sooner. There is something about documenting the fact that one has crossed the imaginary line that divides the world into two spheres giving Uganda one of its unique qualities!

We had our breakfast at Uganda Equator Line restaurant. It boasts of the fact that it’s located in both the Northern and the Southern hemisphere. Their Spanish omelette is off the charts!

Off the highway, the road leading to Lake Mburo National Park is a little bumpy but what it lacks in smoothness, it makes up with the amazing sightings of the beautiful wildlife.

We drove through the park, watched the wild life. I had been thinking about it for a while but I do believe it now, the Zebra is my favorite animal. It’s so graceful, wait… I think that’s the giraffe. What amazes me about the zebras is the fact that even though they all have black and white stripes with a hint of brown, every zebra has a unique pattern of stripes. Isn’t that fantastic?

Lake Mburo National Game Park doesn’t just offer wildlife, there are a number of beautiful lodges that one can stay the night or two to fully experience life in the wild – listen to hundreds of birds chirping, occasionally interrupted by trumpet sounds from the elephants… It will send your imagination running wild!

We had lunch at the luxurious Mihingo Lodge perched high on a rock. Didn’t get a chance to check their cottages as they are scattered all over the place offering seclusion yet still delivering the magnificent view of Lake Mburo and Lake Mburo National Game Park!

Food had me wishing I were such a foodie so I could remember what it was but God was it delicious! Of course I took a photograph of my meal!

On our way back, we took a wrong turn and got lost! It’s bound to happen as tracks look similar but it’s also a bit of fun trying to find your way. We eventually got on to the right track and headed for Rwakobo Rock an eco-friendly lodge nestled on a scenic outcrop at the edge of Lake Mburo National Park. Its little 8 cottages are literally built on a rock! Our guide told us that the rocks offered awesome hiding places during the hide and seek games for the Bachwezi; the natives of the land. I envied them! We found a guest who sheepishly confessed that she’d left her cottage to practise some yoga but gave up a few poses later so she could just sit back and take in the vast natural landscape dotted with the Bahima Pastoralists’ homesteads…

There are so many activities to take part in as shown in the activity list at Rwakobo Rock.

The purpose of the marathon is to promote domestic tourism and to give back to the good people living around the national park. The news about the marathon ‘broke’ the The East African Business Week website and hopefully more information will be available later. Apparently, the marathon will be attended by all kinds of people from all over Uganda and East Africa. Another excuse to get out of the city and meet new exciting people!
