The Dream Job!

The Dream Job!

Freda, one of the smartest people I know once told me, “Every job is a dream job until you start doing it.”

It got me thinking, I mean; I can’t even begin to count how many dream jobs I’ve had in my not so exciting lifetime but I will humor you; banker, astronaut, mechanic, electrician, writer, pilot, music producer just to mention a few examples. Does this mean I have done them all? No. Most of them have even been written off the list and replaced with – explorer, travel writer, tour guide, trophy wife…

The most interesting thing is, sometimes an opportunity is presented to us and within seconds that opportunity is transformed into a dream job. Case in point, my current job as a radio producer. It never once crossed my mind that I would work on radio. When someone asked me if I had ever considered working as a radio producer after my stint as a music producer. Ah good times… All I thought was, that is the most brilliant idea I’ve ever heard!

It presented a whole new set of challenges. I had no freaking idea what the roles entailed and that piqued my interest. I remember calling my Sensei (one needs one or two or three in their life) in panic mode telling them that the station was using a software I wasn’t familiar with and in his calm voice he said, “So you will learn it.”

The first few weeks were the hardest. I cried. Thought about quitting. This dream job wasn’t easy at all. When I complained, my friends would say, “Don’t you see how lucky you are to have a job on radio?” “You were headhunted Olive. They saw something in you.” Long story short, I eventually got the hang of it and became relatively good at it.

It’s just unfortunate that I have a reached a point where I can’t help feeling, “I’ve been there, done that.” Don’t get me wrong, I love my job immensely. It’s just that… It’s the midyear burn and all.

I need a new challenge. My current obsession is travel writing. I see all these blogs by travel “experts” and I’m filled with childish envy. How come I never get to travel anywhere? When will I ever be able to write as flawlessly as these “experts”? How come no one writes about how exceptionally beautiful Uganda is? I want in! I want to write so well that they write about me!

Any tips?
